Rona a Month Ago

M
atatus, exquisite works of art on wheels and where I draw the majority of my despair. Predominantly because there are multiple areas of improvement within this transport method. Today's encounter tested my thermal comfort and my faith. Packed in a 14-seater to transverse 4 counties, I was too frugal to shell out an additional ksh50 that comes with the shuttle luxury of 3 fewer seats.
Zoned Temperature Control -- Would It Be Beneficial In Your Home ...
Two hours have elapsed. We are still at the bus stop waiting for two more travellers for us to be on our way. It is a sauna! And rather than the euphoria experienced in a steam chamber, I sit in a sticky agitated mass of paranoia even though the windows are closed as I use my phone. Thank goodness, we are finally off.
Glance around to acquaint myself with the present county-crossing community and surprisingly majority are still in their jackets. In all fairness, it rained this morning, but now the temperature has risen to unbearable levels! Are they immune to the heat? Maybe they have a nifty new air conditioning gadget sewed onto the insides of their garment. Nothing is inconceivable in this tech-age. More importantly, did you not get wind of the alleged COVID_19 aka Coronavirus patient quarantined right here in Nairobi? P.S the patient tested negative.

As soon as the thought flashed in my mind, someone starts coughing. Lord, is this how it all ends? Not 10 minutes later, ‘seat 11’ gives my standby paranoia a jump start with a much chestier cough. At this point, I'm inspired to deliver a stirring sermon on the end times: how our persistent refusal to open windows will be our Armageddon. No offering will be collected as this is my CSR (commuter social responsibility) Neither shall supplication for long life be offered. Is the prayer hotline a joke? You warm carbon dioxide recycling thanites*!

Cruising well above the authority's designated velocity, my panic is interrupted by the speed governor screaming three rows away where the driver, whose window is completely rolled down allows me sweet, the fleeting reprieve of a stiff breeze. In case you find not another post, I'm tucked away in a makeshift lab with other like-minded solution seekers concocting a remedy for this ill.

*For all you non-conversant with Freud, Thanos is a death wish, it only stands to reason that thanites are those actively seeking to hasten their mortality

  3. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚about a month agoπŸŽΆπŸ˜‚... I should be enrolled to the makeshift lab as well. Reading through and seeing myself in this place...it's funny how the picture is clearly painted in reality and my thoughts....like 'this guy coughing πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚it might be the end.' Great work on the flow and being out the imagery.

The Con in Consumer

T he luxury of browsing items for purchase from the comfort of a bed in a questionable state of undress (seng'enge ni ng'ombe haute couture) has been available to us for quite a while now. Call me old fashioned but it does not compare to the peculiar satisfaction of sauntering down well-stocked aisles adorned in endless rows of colourful brands. Don't act shocked. Surely you are familiar with aisle 2? That paradise comprised of mesmerising motifs of coffees, cocoas and teas in small, medium and large from a variety of manufacturers. A dazzling display of order that is mythical in most of our homesteads. Photo by Charles Gao on Unsplash Either way, replacing online shopping with a proper trip to wherever your current Nakumatt equivalent is, requires a household audit to keep the panic of forgetting the toilet cleaner for the fourth time at bay. Balancing out the excitement is a seriousness driven by my buying power in a fickle economy. Enter the Dragon I am on location at t...

Dark Path

P ristine tree-lined walkways offer a glorious mix of visual and thermal pleasures along Dennis Pritt in the heat of a low hanging equatorial sun. Similarly, warm hues of street lighting must evoke romance in a sweltering Njaanuary evening, one would think. Even though I have traversed this road countless times on my way to work, the evening walk is hellish. That's harsh, the devil probably has tiki torches and fire cauldrons illuminating his real estate. I stumble along at an eighth of my normal speed, careful not to step in dog doo. How I wish I was bat-girl, using sonar, I could find my way home much quicker in this canine-doodie embellished infrastructural maze. Courtesy: Pixabay on Pexels Psychologically I am in a state. A state of short-lived scares dancing in harmonious disquiet. Please note, I'm a small-framed female invisibly (due to the blinding darkness) lacking the art of Krav Maga.   Deduction : poorly lit areas do not inspire the feeling of safety. Perhaps t...

Location Unknown

Photo by Mario Ayala via dribble It might be safe to assume you do not have a personal chauffeur if you aren’t in the 1%. Save for the occasional COVID Uber where you ride back left with a little less than the stipulated social distance between you and the driver in the jam-weaving Suzuki Alto 400. However, using taxi-hailing applications on the regular wouldn't amount to a financially sustainable practice - unless you are Bezos, at which point you might as well own the franchise and its competitors. So, reliable public transport is the way to ride. However, the term reliable has lost its lustre to a point we do not consider all it encompasses: proper pricing, predictable routes, effective communication and calculable timing. No one, forgive the generalisation, living in the outskirts of Nairobi can say, "I paid normal fare rates despite it raining cats and dogs", not with their chest! Meaning people have had to stow their pride and make the tuma kitu call that they had ...
